HULGERISATION

As we developed the HULGER idea, it became obvious that our approach and thought processes could easily touch other technologies, performing similar transformations on anything from CD players to sewing machines.

Reality however confines our work to a narrow line of enquiry as we build the HULGER name and the business behind it.

When we were asked to brief the St Martins final year product design students it was therefore obvious what we were going to ask them to consider: HULGERISATION

The social, economical and technological drivers behind product development, design and marketing send most devices on the same trajectory in an effort to create marketable differentiation. The cycle is as quick as it is ubiquitous and it leaves us with a trail littered with unresolved, over-complex, poorly produced and conceived objects. Technocracy looks forward, never back, so mistakes are rarely corrected. The benefits of hindsight are never applied.

So what if we look around us at the products we take for granted and apply HULGER’s enquiry? How simple could it be? How can we make it not just useable but ENJOYABLE? Dismissing all precedents, what can materiality, form and finish do to create a new purpose, position and status?

The results are compelling and reaffirm our belief in the HULGER approach.

The quality of these responses has only been possible with the bright and creative minds of the St Martin’s students, coupled with their talent and determination. Hit the student links on the right hand navigation bar to view their work.
